Costco Wholesale Corporation is an American multinational corporation which operates a chain of membership-only warehouses, mainly in the United States. As of 2015, Costco was the second largest retailer in the world after Walmart, and as of 2016, Costco was the world’s largest retailer of choice and prime beef, organic foods, rotisserie chicken, and wine.

Costco has warehouses in eight countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia. Costco also operates e-commerce websites in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mexico. As of July 2018, Costco has a total of 727 warehouses: 546 in the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), 100 in Canada, 26 in the United Kingdom, 28 in Asia, and 14 in Australia.

The company opened its first warehouse in Seattle, Washington in 1983. Costco was founded in 1976 by James (Jim) Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman. Their first business venture was a small chain of convenience stores
