Giant Tiger’s first store was opened in 1961 by Clyde Eastman in the Byward Market in Ottawa, Ontario. Eastman had previously worked for a company that operated a chain of variety stores called Woolworth’s. When Woolworth’s closed its Canadian stores in the early 1960s, Eastman saw an opportunity to open a discount store that would sell merchandise at a lower price than the department stores.
